A market entry guide for companies entering African markets

Company registration is the first fixed step in most African markets, and the timeline varies more than companies expect. Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission can register a new limited company in 3–5 business days once documents are in order. Kenya's e-Citizen business registration portal typically takes 7–10 days. South Africa's Companies and Intellectual Property Commission has quoted registration times of 5–7 days, though foreign directors sometimes add delay while their documents are notarized abroad.

Banking is usually the second bottleneck. Most Nigerian banks require a minimum of six months of incorporation history, or a resident director, before opening a corporate account for a foreign-owned entity. This single requirement is the most common reason foreign companies delay their launch by a full quarter beyond their original plan.

Tax registration follows company registration in every market covered here, but the sequencing differs: Nigeria requires a Tax Identification Number (TIN) before a company can open a bank account, while Kenya issues a KRA PIN as part of the same e-Citizen registration flow, cutting a step out of the process.

Local representation requirements vary by sector more than by country. Nigeria's oil and gas sector requires Nigerian Content compliance regardless of company size; Kenya's public procurement rules require a minimum 40% local shareholding for companies bidding on government contracts over a set value threshold; Rwanda has no general local-ownership requirement outside a short list of restricted sectors.

Companies that plan a 6–8 week entry timeline based on registration alone typically end up closer to 3–4 months once banking, tax registration, and any sector-specific licensing are accounted for. Building that buffer into the original plan, rather than treating it as a delay, avoids most of the friction companies report after the fact.
