Accounting software for a small business operating across currencies
QuickBooks, Xero, and Wave, compared for a small business invoicing and receiving payment in more than one currency.
Accounting software for a business operating across African and international markets needs multi-currency invoicing, bank reconciliation that handles a local African bank account alongside an international one, and reporting that doesn't require a full-time bookkeeper to maintain.
QuickBooks covers multi-currency accounting directly and integrates with the widest range of local bank feeds and payment processors, including Paystack, at a mid-range subscription price. Xero covers similar ground with a interface several small-business users report as more intuitive for someone without a bookkeeping background, though its direct bank feed coverage in some African markets is narrower than QuickBooks', worth checking for the specific country before committing. Wave is free for core accounting and invoicing, with revenue coming from its payment processing and payroll add-ons rather than the software itself, suited to a very small business that doesn't yet need multi-currency depth or extensive integrations.
A business already invoicing in more than one currency with local bank accounts to reconcile does well with QuickBooks or Xero depending on which has better feed coverage for the specific country. A very small business mainly invoicing occasionally in one currency is well served by Wave at no software cost.
